Worked on this a long time, it always demanded more – the light was wrong, colors too garish (still are), the superimposed paintings not enough or too much, the sizing of the artist (not me) became significant because it needed to say something about the relationship of artist to creation – of inception to result - I liked the idea of a tiny figure surrounded by huge canvasses–as a child I adored Piranesi’s vertically cluttered rooms of statuary, etchings and lithographs. . . and then I moved on to something else and this image slipped away and when I rediscovered it a few weeks ago it seemed alive and still fresh and I made a pact to finish it. I liked the image of a artist alone in the rusty foundry of creation, a creaking conveyor belt trundling overhead, the walls alive with images of other places and times and people but for the moment he could care less, he is pre-occupied with rolling a cigarette or maybe paying bills, more likely the latter considering he is an artist. From frame right a billowing blue light declares it is still day and there are people and activity; perhaps he is being missed. In a moment he will rise and walk in that direction and depress the light switch by the door and the room will plunge to darkness, a giant space left to its own device, the images smoldering. Like all good art they are lit from within. I always wondered what paintings did when no one was in the room; so much life energy had been poured into them I’m sure they don’t just hang there. At 38 X 56 this was printed large for the sake of details and will be finished in encaustic.
