Monumental Cemetery "Santa Maria Del Pianto" - Naples - Italy
The Cemetery of Santa Maria del Pianto is located in Via Nuova del Campo.
Its history begins in 1656, when the city of Naples was hit by a devastating plague epidemic which, at the height of its spread, caused up to over a thousand deaths a day. Soon the problem arose of the burial of all those corpses that had to be moved to a place far from the inhabited center.
Thus a large cave was chosen on the hill of Poggioreale, an ancient tuff quarry already used by the Greeks between the fifth and fourth centuries BC. into which the bodies were thrown and which was sealed with a wall. In memory, in 1662, a church was also built, dedicated to Santa Maria del Pianto, designed by Francesco Antonio Picchiatti.
We have news of the actual cemetery starting from around 1865, when the burials began to be built behind the church.
The Campo Santo is famous thanks to the presence of the graves of some famous people including Enrico Caruso and Totò.
