I left my airbnb in New Orleans at 6am, drive round the corner and see this scrawny looking lady feeding grits to some chickens. I pull over and say hi. Her name is Bessie and she's a little worse for wear as she's been out dancing all night and is nursing a mild hangover. She's 52, or so she tells me, though she doesn't look it.
She allows me to snap away. She invites me into her house, it's messy; ashtrays strewn everywhere, it's unkempt and poor. She tells me about her family, i get the feeling she has fallen on hard times. I'm not sure if she was or still is a crack addict or a prostitute, but there is something about her that is special, she has that zing, that sparkle in her eyes. I loved photographing her. She made my day and i hope i made hers as well.
