Painting is the practice of applying pigments, paint colour or another medium to a solid surface (matrix or substrate). The medium (oil, acrylic, gouache, watercolour, pastel, ink, spray, etc.) is usually applied at the base with a brush, but other tools, such as knives, sponges and airbrushes, can be used. The final work is also called a painting.

Painting is an important form in the visual arts, bringing elements such as drawing, gesture (gestural painting), composition, narrative (narrative art) or abstraction (abstract art).
