The idea of the Birdcages Of The Sky series came to me when a friend of mine took me to Angel Place (I think that’s what it’s called) - where outside of an Indian restaurant were these birdcages just hanging between the buildings. I like how these images turned out - strange because it was just click and shoot handheld. I don’t like the idea of being a caged artist. That is, bound to using a tripod all the time. I know a tripod has its place, but sometimes my most interesting effects come when I don’t use one.

They’re the kind of photos I take when I don’t expect to have anything to photograph - they always turn out better than I expect them to even if it might feel awkward at first when shooting. Spending more than five seconds in a place helps you contemplate what you’re actually seeing. You’re blind from the glare of the sun but the camera is your eyes. It records what you can’t remember seeing - it fixes it in a way your memory can’t. Makes me think of the old internet saying “Pics or it didn’t happen”. That saying has two faces, because while photographs prove something happened, even then you can’t take the image at face value. A photograph can’t capture every thought in your head. It captures, however - the things you might fail to notice. They fill the gaps in your memory from a day you barely remember.

I picked Birdcages of the Sky as a title for these photos because the image of floating birdcages is like something you’d see in a Miyazaki film - seeing them in real life is surreal.
