M W We used to interprete someone's work through our own past or present experiences, perhaps present emotions, desires, feelings we deal with, etc. First, I saw a title, then the image. Somehow the title is much apart from my vision and feelings about this work. So probably my interpretation will be far from yours, Roberto ;))
Well, at once I saw going away, escape(?), leaving. Then behind her the ruins, well-built walls of a wreck now a bit destroyed by a time flow. And these ruins means something what was created and "built" by us during our life. Something we felt comfortable and safe in it. But sometimes a moment comes in life, very difficult moment, that we have to leave this, change this, throw it away to catch a breathe. Sometimes it is the biggest life desicion which will put our life in a completely new view, light. Very often it is called starting a new life. This woman gives the last look at the past. Maybe with sort of sorrow, sentiment, but without negative memories. In this image we don't see where is she going, where is a new way she plans to walk on. Some life desicions need to be taken up even if we don't have solutions and plans for the future. Sometimes the present situation urges us to change it NOW... Sorry for this long talking but this all is very familiar to my life situation :)))

Roberto De Mitri Well, Maria … :) … from where to start? There are so many things that you have written and which deserve the due attention… :)
First of all, I agree with you when you say that we use to read someone's work through our own experiences. I always say that each of us is free to interpret a picture or read in it what he wants (and to find in it what he seeks), depending on his sensitivity and in function of his experiences. And what the experiences and memories suggest to him.
The title is taken from a poem by Emily Dickinson, poetry that I think fits well with the picture's mood. although, the title of the photo is the first line of the poem and perhaps, I have to say even for me, it doesn't match “ideally”.
But by omitting the title, I do not know if your reading is or will be away from mine. Also because I personally have no opinion or key reading about this image.
I explain what I mean. I don't say that this photo is not communicative or that it ism't expressive or that it doesn't cause any emotion. I'm not saying this photo is not able to talk about a story. Rather, the contrary.
This photo talks about a story. But a story of which I am not able (and I'm not ready) to ask questions.
I see this image and I understand immediately that this image talks about something of the past. A past far away and extinct and almost disappeared in the mists of time. Something beautiful that comes from the past and comes to us in ruin. In neglect. in abandonment.
Well… I think I can go on endlessly on this subject. But, in conclusion, I think that our readings are not so different. This photo, as well as other photos of the Emily series, are about a story, but this story is not possible to know what it is. Because it is as if we had a vision limited to an infinitesimal instant within a stream, like a flowing river. But we do not know what its source is and where this river flows. So we can gather, from this moment, only sensations and perceptions. We are able to see what we want and believe to see.
I do not want to give a r

Roberto De Mitri ... I do not want to give a reading to this story, because it may be about my story. these are my photos. So they voluntarily or unconsciously speak to me of something I'm afraid to ask.
And thank you infinitely for the wonderful contribution you gave to the photo.

Roberto De Mitri Thierry ... :) ... indeed, the Lady of the Castle... But this kingdom is in decline and in ruin. A romantic mood, but everything is now extinct. It's just a memory... :)

Edna Dott This masterpiece evokes powerful emotions, Roberto.. I get the sense of being torn, between lingering and moving on. Everything can be adjusted but death, but at what cost? easier said than done for sure. Your work always speaks to the soul, without words, for, silence is, the language of the soul.. Extremely moving image, thank you for sharing.

M W In fact our interpretations are actually not far away from eachother :) Anyway I will keep closer to mine one because it's a good visual motivator for me to move and change something in the life :)
And I like this Emily series. Nice job!

Roberto De Mitri Edna… :) … Your words are always very faithful in describing the feelings and sensations of the photo. As if they were the words of a narrator. This feeling of “being torn, between lingering and moving on”… this “torn” … Is an indefinable and eternal moment. As a feeling of perpetual imbalance and that never finds peace. A limbo suspended in a thought between what was past and what could be the future. Now will be, but could be the future. A future that can no longer be adjusted.
at what cost? You say… How many things we have given up in our lives and we are still emotionally tied to them. This is the eternal limbo. Like a damn. Everything can be adjusted, but sometimes the cost and sacrifice is very bitter.
And thank you very much for the precious and deep comment… :)
30 May 2017 at 11:39pm
Roberto De Mitri What you say is a very nice thing and I like to read this, Maria … :) … also because I'm sure of the sincerity of your words and your good intentions.
This is also the beauty of photography! :) Sometimes a photo works like a tarot card. It can be interpreted each time in a different way.
The spirit of these photos is not definitive. And maybe in the future they might talk to me differently.
In your reading there is a positive attitude. There is movement. A desire to move on and beyond. And I am also convinced of this. of the usefulness, the need to move forward. Now I speak for me. As I have done in these years. But, personally speaking, the burden I bear on me is still very heavy. We'll see in the future.
And I like very much this series too, yes… :D
Ciao e grazie! :)

Dana Winkelman Roberto. I am in agreement with Maria (MW) on this one. My interpretation is very similar. It seems like the subject is leaving these ruins behind... All the best. Dana...

Roberto De Mitri well Dana... :) ... For sure it was said and written a lot, on this photo. And it is probably useless to add other words. For sure a photo, like the others, open to the various readings. It can suggest different sensations and interpretations. Some very close, some very distant. I think the important thing is that it is a communicative photo and conveys emotions... and thank you very much for the kind comment! :) Ciao Dana!

Toni Traglia Magnifica atmosfera di distacco e anche di rimpianto di un mondo che sembra dissolversi.
5 Jun 2017 at 01:52am

9 Sep 2017 at 12:23am
Roberto De Mitri Ms. Laura...
