Betsy Eby and Bo Bartlett

David Floria Gallery is proud to announce the opening of the first two person exhibition of new paintings by Betsy Eby and Bo Bartlett.
Bartlett and Eby, who were recently married, live and work on Vashon Island, Washington, during the winter and on Wheaton Island, Maine, during the summer. The exhibition will consist of encaustic on wood panel and wax and graphite on paper drawings by Eby and gouache on paper paintings by Bartlett.

Betsy Eby’s compositions are luminous organic abstractions inspired by the natural environment of her bi-coastal, island life. They are evocative of fields of flowers, tide pool life or microscopic organisms. They seem to glow with a warm, contemplative inner light.

She applies up to 20 layers of hot, molten encaustic, a mixture of beeswax and Demar varnish, spread on wood panels. Interspersed between these translucient layers, she composes mostly in brightly colored oil paint. Her wax and graphite drawings are delicate and elegant arrangements of looping lines which are quite different from her large and ambitious paintings.

Bo Bartlett is an acclaimed master of contemporary American realist figurative painting. Although he is well known for his huge, psychologically complex narrative canvases, the works in this exhibition are small, detailed and straightforward works in gouache on paper. His subjects are his everyday life populated by his beautiful wife Betsy, who is his omnipresent muse. For example Isle of View depicts Betsy’s face in front of a simple gray clapboard house, or Juneau, where Betsy leans on the rail of a ferryboat while gazing at the mountainous coast of Alaska.

Betsy Eby was born in Seaside, Oregon, in 1967. She received a BA from the University of Oregon, Eugene, in 1990. Her paintings are represented in public and private collections nationwide. Bo Bartlett was born in Columbus, Georgia, in 1955. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia. His paintings are represented in the permanent collections of numerous art museums.
