Arno Fischer is an iconic figure in history of German photography. The ROSPHOTO exhibition presents ca. 140 pieces of the renowned master unveiling different periods of his work. The starting point for the exhibition is one of Fischer's early series, Situation Berlin. These photographs were made from 1953 to 1960, just before construction of the Berlin Wall. In 1961 they were rejected for publication, but it was this series that introduced the talented photographer to the society. His prophetic image Crack in the Wall, which was created in the early 1950’s became a symbol of the divided Berlin.

To see and show people in a manner like the people portrayed see themselves – Bettina Rheims links her humanly approach with her own artistic style and created with »Gender Studies« an impressive series that is of high social aspiration and essential meaning. At the same time it strikes with its atmospheric aesthetics.

A sculptor who began working during the postwar period in a classical figurative style, Alina Szapocznikow radically reconceptualized sculpture as an imprint not only of memory but also of her own body. Though her career effectively spanned less than two decades (cut short by the artist’s premature death in 1973 at age 47), Szapocznikow left behind a legacy of provocative objects that evoke Surrealism, Nouveau Réalisme, and Pop art.

He was one of the first to experiment with superimposed images and montages, to leave the documentary aspect of photography behind him and enter the world of the unreal and the ambiguous. An oversized female nude appears in the middle of a street scene.

The two newly commissioned works invoke several recurring themes in Orozco’s oeuvre, including the traces of erosion, poetic encounters with mundane materials, and the ever-present tension between nature and culture.
