Ionut Cirja, London, United-KingdomBirthday December, 26I (Ionut Cirja) saw the first ray of light on a very cold 2nd day of Christmas 1983 in a small village (Filioara) on the north eastern side of Romania.
I spent my early childhood years in communism, when you only had a few joys, such as the 10 minutes cartoons aired every evening on the national TV channel. Nonetheless, I had the 'real countryside' childhood that children nowadays only dream off.
Post 1989 revolution era came (after the communism fell) and caught me in my secondary school years: as part of the transition, the national TV channel started to air a weekly jazz show which charmed me as much as Mathematics did (a legacy from my mum) and the Formula 1 races having Ayrton Senna as my role model back then.
My highschool and university years followed the same Mathematics path with a degree in Computer Sciences.
Only later was I meant to accidentally discover photography following a discussion with one of my best friends: the way he described a picture by a contemporary Romanian photographer (who later became my menthor) bewitched me and from that moment I knew I had to explore this mystical world.
But the practical side of life always comes to wake one up and I had to take a job. I found myself trying to mix daily job and photography for a couple of good years. Whenever I got the chance I was either reading, studying or experimenting different photographers genres and styles. We, Romanians, call this 'testing the sea with the little finger'.
I must admit ,though, I was always fascinated by the conceptual side of photography (possibly because of how I discovered it), but nonetheless by portraits and photojournalism. Few years later, I started gaining some acknowledgement, but, at that stage in my life, I kept photography more as a passion not so much trying to bring it to a whole superior level.
Things changed completely when I moved to another country to live with my family in one of the biggest cities in the world (London). I still can't understand how nor when did photography become more important taking more time then the actual job, but it did and I was soon to realise the 'big' city made me a precious gift: street photography, as a genre, while I was slowly conquering. I started working on a couple of series and I hope to conclude them in projects sooner rather than later.
Even if I now live somewhere else, I am still in close connection with my homeland. I can only hope some of the ideas intertwined in next years photographic journeys would pay back.
