When and how do you start to create?
I was brought up in a family that all were somehow busy in photography, my grandfather, my father, my uncle. When my father died I inherited his gear and I started experimenting also with the technics he explained to me.
Do you went to an art school or self-taught?
Mostly self-taughed When I wanted more out of my photography I did some courses and finally I found Forum Beeldtaal which is lead by Jorgen Polman (teacher at a Academy of Photography in Eindhoven). Nowadays I am a member of the mastergroup where I reflect with other members on the series we make.
Do you create as a professional or for your own?
I do mostly social projects, like a reflexing on how society tries to avoid looking what is in front of them. Telling stories about people. I create mostly for the purpose of the project and the people that I photograph. I don't earn anything with it. So I guess it it is for myself.
How do you learn and work your skill?
If I need a new technique for my creations then I start searching and do a course, workshop or find out myselve.
What do you like in this art, your motivation?
My motivation is telling stories about people. Mostly sensitive subjects like mental illness or stuff people deal with in life...
What do you want to express or arouse in those who watch your work?
I want to make people think about the way they look or opinionate other people, just because they are different. My main goal is to tell people to accept each other exaclty the way they are. You miss out on so much if you have an opinion richt away, just take a moment to try and have a better look, just take the energy to get to know each other...
What are your favourite subject(s)?
People and cats...
How do you prepare a creation or project work?
The images just come to my mind and then I have to try and photograph them... When I talk to the people in my projects I mostly know how I want to photograph them.
What are your prefered moment(s) when you create?
No sunlight, as little distractions as possible, a grey day, perfect light!
What are your most representative creations, and why? (links)
On my website you can see the series I have made so far, here are the links to my recent work. https://www.susanleurs.com/intheshadowofvoices https://www.susanleurs.com/itsmecaspar https://www.susanleurs.com/iamhenk
What are you trying to share via your art?
The stories about the people I photograph...
Who are artists that fascinate or give you inspiration? (links)
http://machielbotman.com/ www.jorgenpolman.nl http://www.johnlambrichts.nl/ and many more....
What equipment and/or technic do you use?
All kinds, just what I need...
How and why your work as changed since you started?
I have learned how to make my stories about people so give my pictures an extra dimension.
What does the Internet media give you?
Sometimes tutorials or contacts, inspiration...
What are you expecting from Art Limited and/or other members?
Hopefully feedback and inspiration for the future.
What was the best advice given to you as an artist?
Just be yourself...
If you couldn’t be an artist, what would you do?
Somehow I would try to be creative, it is like breathing...
What are your plans in the future?
Make more series...
Do you have anything else to say?
Breathe, love, live, love life... before you know it, it is gone!
