Hephaistos is the God of the blacksmiths and the patron of Arts. He is the son of Zeus and Hera, rejected by his mother because of his lameness and ugliness. She thrown him from the Olympus down to earth. Hephaistos has a workshop under a volcano and his work causes frequently eruptions. He designed and created marvelous artwork for other Gods, the armor of Achilles e.g., or the shield of Athena. Prometheus stole the fire from the forge of Hephaistos and gave it to mankind.

Henri Manguy I see a corner at the bottom of a dark cavern from which I expect to see some winged and clawed demon arise ...

Jos Letschert Henri, the best thing is that it is evoking imagination. In your case: it works! Thanks for that!

Jos Letschert Roland, thank you very much for your observation of the forge. Yes, indeed, my intention is to leave a lot of space for the imagination of the one who looks at it.

Jos Letschert Marcel, Pierre and Joseph, thanks a lot for the appreciation of the dark world of Hephaistos. He has a very dualistic character, for now I only show his forge. Maybe I try to make his portrait once. It will not be one of the most easy jobs. He is ugly and tender, cruel and generous, an artist and a rowdy.

Radek Kilinski Strong forging. Great underground mood, the anvil power pours out the desire for transformation. (strong one)

Edna Dott A true mystery of a painting, enigmatic and possibly 'misunderstood', like Hephaistos. A darker side of your talent.. so intriguing with the many textures. It holds the viewer captive for a long time. Great great work, Jos.

Jos Letschert Radek, thanks a lot for your close observation. I think you have got the message.
19 May 2017 at 09:43am
Jos Letschert Edna, yes indeed, it is full of possibilities for misunderstanding, like Hephaistos himself. You are right. I am very pleased that you appreciate the painting, especially why it is not a very accessible painting. It shows the darkness of the forge, the glowing fire, the desire, the fate. I think it has possibilities for multi-interpretations, and so it is ment to be.

Regina Susanne Borchert kompliment-erinnert mich auch an eine wunde-eine wunde in der schmiede des schicksals
20 May 2017 at 08:26am

Jos Letschert Ret, yes seductive, both sides of a coin indeed. Thanks for your observation.

Jos Letschert Katon, thanks a lot for your comment. Yes, it is a mysterious world Homer has left us, with gods with so many human characteristics, positive and negative. Hephaistos is kind of liaison officer between the upper- and the underworld, sometimes annoying, sometimes cruel, sometimes humid, sometimes modest. Besides that he is a patron of arts, that gives him extra points, don't you think too.

Thanks for that, dear Jos Letschert!
