Henk Aalberts I know this ferryman of hell by Gustave Doré"s oil painting, and so much different is your interesting characterisation, much more depicting the personification of darkness not the eyes with fire, but dark extinguished eyes and a haggard face...really wonderful work!

Jos Letschert Henk, thanks a lot Doré illustrated Dantes Inferno. Yes, indeed, Doré created an excellent scenery, very expressive and fearfully. My intention is to express the character of the ferryman. Thanks for your beautiful comment and compliment on my attempt.

Roberto De Mitri avatar
Roberto De Mitri in his facial expression, it is possible to feel really all the dramatic heaviness that Charon carries inside his heart ... he carries souls. and every soul carries his heart more and more to the bottom of hell...

Jos Letschert Roberto, yes indeed, his task becomes more difficult with every day he is carrying it ouit. That is why I have tried to give him that inwards directed look and that almost perished expression. Thanks for your very interesting comment.

Jos Letschert Joseph, sad indeed, it is not the most attractive job he carries out, the ferryman of the Styx.
11 June 2018 at 06:11pm
Jos Letschert avatar
Jos Letschert Gérard, thanks for your observation and compliment. Merci beaucoup. This sculpture is less accessible as my other sculptures, I think, and it is quite difficult to make a photo of it. Beate has chosen for this cut out. The whole thing has a kind of 'Mannerism' expression, caused by the position of the neck and the unnatural twist of the head. The heavy stone that forms the nose (you can see only the exterior part of it) makes the sculpture rather heavy and it was difficult to keep it in a balance. Now it has a kind of resting expresion, yes, and sadness too, as Joseph already mentioned.

Toni Traglia Great interpretation of the human destiny Jos, atrophied from its wicked behaviors that they upset the environment and its same nature, destroyed by its trashs.
26 June 2018 at 05:09pm
Jos Letschert avatar
Jos Letschert Toni, thanks for your comment and observation. It is human destiny to change e.g. the Adda for the Styx. Don't think about that, it is Homer's fault.

Jos Letschert avatar
Jos Letschert Nicole, thanks a lot for your comment and compliment. Sometimes I know the characters before working on them, sometimes I connect them during the prcoess of sculpting. It is mostly a kind of acton - reaction, or: being taken by the subject. Leading topic however is Greek mythology.
