The Convento do Carmo is a former monastery of the Carmelite Order in Lisbon, Portugal. It was built between 1389 and 1423 on the oath of Marshal Nuno Álvares Pereira. The building complex also includes the Igreja do Carmo church, which is considered a magnificent example of Lisbon Gothic.
The building was destroyed in the great earthquake of Lisbon in 1755. The restoration initiated by Queen Mary came to a standstill after the secularization of the monastic orders in 1834, after only one wing of the monastery had been restored. Today, the headquarters of the Portuguese National Guard is located there. The ruins of the monastery church house the Museu Arqueológico do Carmo. In the roofless nave, concerts are also held in the summertime due to the excellent acoustics.
From the Rossio and the Elevador de Santa Justa (also called Elevador do Carmo), today's ruins immediately catch the eye.
