It’s a lifeline to the little birds in the lean months & besides it’s nice to see them busying themselves with their comings & goings. But good deeds can have unintended consequences; we were not the only ones watching all the feathered toing & froing. One still summer afternoon we heard the startled cry & dull thump of an avian commotion in the yard. A Blackbird had been caught unawares by a Sparrow Hawk. Half fascinated, half outraged we watched from a few feet away as “our” Blackbird was unceremoniously gutted over a pot plant, the Sparrow Hawk minded not, this was how he made his living after all. These few flight feathers were all that remained when he flew the yard, his lightened quarry held firm in a yellow talon. We see him occasionally still; he sits bold as brass in the shadowy boughs of a tree & waits patiently for the little birds to come. Sometimes he’s successful other times not. We know when he’s there though by the silence in the yard.
