Frank Stella

The Retrospective
Kunstmuseum, Painting, Wolfsburg, Germany
Saturday September 8, 2012 - Sunday January 20, 2013 - Event ended.

Frank Stella is one of the last living heroes of American painting from the 1950s and 1960s, the time when American art found its way to its own identity, reaching its historic zenith in the process. The hardly twenty-year old artist conquered the New York art scene in the late 1950s with a sensation: His large Black Paintings not only intensified the discussion of Minimalism in painting, but also prepared the way for the “exit from the picture in space”.

But to art criticism’s great surprise, the passionate racecar driver did not follow the avant-garde retinue that was almost inevitably heading in the direction of Minimal Art. Stella pioneered a completely different path that led him to ever more opulent, ever more baroque reliefs. With this idiosyncratic turn “from Minimalism to Maximalist,” Frank Stella developed into one of the most distinctive artists of the 20th century. From September 1, 2012 to January 20, 2013, the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg will dedicate a comprehensive retrospective to him that features approximately 70 large-large works.

Thanks to a customized exhibition architecture and flexible wall system in its large hall, the Kunstmuseum enables the colorful, in part gigantic aluminum reliefs to fully unfold in a way that hardly any other museum can. It supports the representation of his work’s consequential development over a half century, tracing in the process the successive “conquering of space from the two-dimensionality of the painting” to the visionary and most recent works that anticipate basic elements of fractal and digital aesthetics. The retrospective simultaneously wishes to place Stella’s oeuvre in a broader art historical context for the first time that extends far beyond modernism. At the conclusion, an over-sized ArchiSkulptur conceived by the artist exclusively for this exhibition will tower above the parcours.

The retrospective forms the keystone for the varied international presentations honoring to the artist on the occasion of his 75th birthday.
