We’ve decided to sell our house on an island in Maine. Not an easy decision. There are many different stories crammed into this image. Memory being so much better at accumulating than it is at articulating. I partially grew up here. I spent many summers walking its cliffs and forests and taking pictures, as well as being a house-painter and doing odd jobs. I directed a feature film that takes place on the island (“The Congressman” is available on DVD at Amazon .com). The warm and intimacy and countless memories of the house and the beauty of the island setting are irreplaceable. The distance and hardship involved in getting to the island and maintaining an exposed structure in rough weather during long periods of absence argued strongly that we let younger caretakers assume responsibility for seeing the house built by a fisherman in 1918, into its second century. There are people and places you can carry in your heart forever but it’s best not to be chained to them.

Alexander Kolesnik Always nice to relive a pleasant and emotionally charged memories of his past, but not the fact that a new visit to the long-familiar places will give peace of mind, everything flows, everything changes, there is a feeling that to lose forever. Sorry, I myself, inspired by the art work. And the author has created this masterpiece clearly not in a state of depression and without a source of pessimism. Powerful dynamics, expectation of actions, and changes, and the color is admirable.

Oleg Ferstein It took me awhile to realize what does actually so much attracts me in this image and what it reminds me... And suddenly I got it! I was 5 years old when my father presented me a Magic lantern. I still do remember this very weird sensation before you fall asleep. The shapes and the colors at the certain moment are occupying the whole space around you. They, in fact become the very environment of your existence. And more than! You yourself are becoming a part of it! And this is the very moment when you are situated in a kind of transition from being awake to а sleep state! :)

Dana Winkelman avatar
Dana Winkelman Jared. I am just getting caught up and finally have some time to spend with your images. My thoughts before I read your commentary: It is a sumptuous, sensuous celebration of color and motion. At first, I thought of Hendrix (the wind cries mary) and the more I looked I began thinking it reminded me of Dylan's "All along the watchtower". I was reminded of these songs because of the poetic nature of the image that is open to interpretation. In some sense, dense with meaning but told sparsely (i.e. not insistent).

After reading you explanation and motivation, I think you did a wonderful job of avoiding the sentimentality associated with these decisions that we (i.e. folks our age) have to make. Instead you made a beautiful and meaningful homage that is a joy to look at, like the joy your house and its environment gave you. What could be better? Nothing for an artist with your heart and talent.

All the best. Dana...
