Symmetry / asymmetry, photography by Jonathan Charles. Quoting from my introduction to my later work: "It's rather like when you start photography altogether you are struck by the wonderful shapes of trees and old buildings and small objects that catch your eye, and you feel compelled to take dozens of photos of them. Now you have this perfect sculptural model and you just think WOW! it's all so beautiful, I must somehow get this into my camera. Every different angle brings a new masterpiece into view and you delight in all the play of light and shadow. This is an exhilarating time.

"It's some while later you start to think that maybe there's something missing, that it's not really much different from what you've seen others do, that it doesn't have any personal input from your imagination, that it doesn't tell a new story. Then you begin to appreciate that you can use the language of these wonderful and affecting shapes to express your own specific ideas and the whole process takes on a new depth."

This is a record of this early stage in my photography: the pictures may lack any philosophy or deeper meaning and are not all particularly original but for the sheer appreciation of the subject I still like them - especially as a reminder of the time in my life and the excitement in getting started in the art of the nude.. Canon P rangefinder, Canon 28mm F2.8 lens. Note for Monochrome Project: Film - HP5, processed - Microphen @ 1000ASA. In People, Nude

Natalia Cambarass
Natalia Cambarass Thank you so much for your explanation of this series - it is so difficult to find out what people are trying to do with their photos, especially nudes. It's amazing to me that these were taken so long ago (before I was born!) and they still seem so fresh. I think you're being over modest - they ARE original yet somehow classical at the same time, and beautiful.

Marianne Charlotte Mylonas-svikovsky This series is interesting as far as lines, geometry, original angles, but it definitely corresponds to your explanatios (always very interesting!) no feeling, no intrinsic, symbolic, deep artistic expression - one has got to dig into things, true!!!!
