2006 was a key-point in my art in many ways, but notably because I had decided to put my isographic pens (my own preferred medium for many years) away and try some drawing, which I had never actually tried. Outline sketches, sure... lots of those over the years... but I'd never had the 'bottle' to attempt a complete, detailed pencil drawing. This was my first attempt at 'drawing'.
'The Kiss' was a project I've had in mind for some years: I've always had a fondness for fantasy and in faerie lore in particular, but had often wondered how an artist might get around the 'glued-on' look regarding wings (usually butterfly wings) portrayed on the 'traditional' fairy figure.
I looked seriously into the notion of how such a creature might actually be built as a 'working model', anatomically speaking. So I spent some weeks first carrying out some studies on muscle groups, tension factors, weight distribution etc... then went on to look into how various types of wings are attached to mammals and insects.
The Kiss was the result of this exercise. Did it work? I hope it did. This work has since been published in 'Vampire Universe' by Jonathan Mayberry, Citadel Press.
Cheers, and thanks for looking in. All comments welcome.
