Its name comes from hungry wolf packs that would howl outside the villages of Native Americans.
It was extremely cold and windy the night this photo was taken. The wind chill factor ranged between -30°F and -60°F. Note the two, standing lenticular clouds over Mt. Katahdin. They were visible and stable from 1AM to 6:45 AM. This is a long time for that type of cloud to remain intact.
